The Lions of Mississippi is the largest service organization in the world with more than 43,000 statewide members and 1.4 million members worldwide. Service projects sponsored by the Lions of MS include The Boys & Girls Leadership Conference and MS All-State Lions Band.
Boys & Girls Leadership Conference was held at Roosevelt State Park in Morton during the weekends of March 2nd-4th for the boys and March 8th-11th, 2012 for the girls. 42 young men and 47 young women from across Mississippi attended these conferences; each was chosen by a member of a local chapter of The Lions Club. For their participation they received a $4000 scholarship to be used over 4 years, if they so choose to attend William Carey University. Brookhaven High School’s Boys Leadership representative was Stephen Davey and Dylan Farris and BHS’s Girls Leadership representatives were Jessica Patel and Jessica Carr
The next honor is from the Mississippi Governor’s School. It is a residential honors program established in 1981 at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. Governor’s School is designed to provide academic, creative and leadership experiences for a select number of rising high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in their studies and who show high intellectual, creative and leadership potential. This year’s representatives to Governor’s School are Christen Benson and Alexandra Craig
American Legion Boy’s State: The American Legion is dedicated to strengthening America. They believe there is no better way to this end than to work with their nation’s youth in order to prepare them for the tasks. This is a tremendous honor for one young man here at BHS, to be with 350 of Mississippi’s most outstanding young men. At Boy’s State this young man will have the opportunity to become involved in the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial operations of state government as well as governmental activities on the county and municipal levels. Magnolia Electric Youth Leadership Award: The Magnolia Electric Power Association had begun acknowledging young leaders in our area with Youth Leadership Program. This Program recognizes two winners from16 high school from Pike, Walthall, Lincoln, Amite, Franklin, and Lawrence Counties. Representatives from the 16 high schools were invited to send a student showing the best leadership potential to an interview session. The top two winners from the interviewees were selected, and they became Magnolia Electric’s representatives at the annual State Youth Leadership Program, held in Washington, D.C. THE PANTHER PRINTS: The editors-in-chief of The Panther Prints, which is the BHS’s school newspaper were Erica Bridwell and Daniel Davis.
OLE BROOK YEARBOOK: The Ole Brook is a full-color yearbook, recording the memories of 2011-2012 for years to come. The co-editors-in-chief of the Ole Brook Yearbook were Erica Bridwell and Daniel Davis. Editor of Student Life was Sydney Smith; Editor of Photography was Sydney Smith; Editor of People was Ellen Doty; Editor of Academics was Chelci Wilson; Editor of Sports was Brooke Hosick; Editor of Organizations was Jesse Berry; Editor of Community was Kameko Brice. Kelly McIntyre serves as faculty advisor for the yearbook and the newspaper.
Academic Competition Team: The 2011-2012 Academic Competition Team competed in a tournament this year at Madison Central High School, Southwest Mississippi Community College, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The 2011-2012 Members of the Academic Competition Team were Seniors Dylan Farris, Jessie Patel, Abbey Hickman, Ansley Braden, Terrell Breakfield, Hannah Wilson, Stephen Davey, Drew Jones, and Theavis Cooper. Juniors are Ellen Doty and Dallas Hickman. Sophomores are Kristen McCoy, Ian Sicks, Karen Patti, Brett Spring, and Graham Carter. Susan Thames and Amy Rutland served as advisors for the team.
2012 Science Bowl Regional Competition: Two teams of students from BHS participated in the quiz bowl style competition at the Mississippi University for Women’s campus on Friday, February 17, 2012. This regional science bowl competition consisted of a round-robin question and answer competition in which 18 teams from across the state vied for 8 places in the single elimination final rounds. Each team consisted of 4 members competing and a possible alternate to be rotated in after the half time break for each match. Team 1 consisted of Team Captain-Stephen Davey, Kenneth Sith, Cole Case, and Terrell Breakfield. Team 2 consisted of Team Captain Drew Jones, Ellen Doty, Jessie Claire Henning, Ansley Braden, and Brett Spring. Team 2 advanced to the single elimination finals where they competed in three preliminary rounds defeating MSMS II for the opportunity to compete against MSMS I for the 1st place prize in the final round. Going into the 2nd half of the final round, BHS II had MSMS I down 16 to 0. MSMS I came back after the break to defeat BHS II team by only 6 points by answering a 10 point bonus in the final seconds of the match. These students were given medals and a trophy at the awards ceremony held at MUW the end of that evening. The medals and trophy are now on display in the science building trophy case. Copiah Lincoln Community College Science Quest Award: On April 5, 2012 nine BHS students participated in a test-based event in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the Copiah-Lincoln Community College annual Science Quest competition. They competed against 10 other high schools in the Copiah-Lincoln District. BHS students earned 7 of the 15 awards given. Top finishers received plaques at the event and scholarships for future use: Ellen Doty-4th Place in Biology and a $250 scholarship to Co-Lin; Jessie Henning-Honorable Mention in Chemistry; Jessie Patel-3rd Place in Chemistry and $450 scholarship to Co-Lin; Dylan Farris-1st Place in Chemistry and a 2 year full tuition scholarship to Co-Lin; Drew Jones-4th Place in Physics and $250 scholarship to Co-Lin; Daniel Davis-2nd Place in Physics and a 1 year full tuition scholarship to Co-Lin; Stephen Davey-1st place in Physics and a 2 year full tuition scholarship to Co-Lin. Mississippi College Science and Math Competition: On February 2, students from BHS participated in the Mississippi College Science and Math Tournament. This tournament is the largest science and math competition in the state. 51 High Schools, both public and private, sent their best students to compete in the areas of biology, math, chemistry, physics, and computer science. Students competed individually in the morning in the test taking competition and a team of 4 competed in the afternoon in the quiz bowl style completion. Terrell Breakfield scored in the top 10% in Math; Stephen Davey scored in the top 10% in Chemistry; Cole Case scored in the top 10% in Biology
Each of these students received a $2000 scholarship to Mississippi College:Dallas Hickman scored in the top 15% in Biology earning a $1200 scholarship award. Scoring in the top 20% were Drew Jones in Physics and Kenneth Sith in Chemistry. Each earned a $1200 scholarship to MC. Scoring in the top 30% were Dylan Farris in Chemistry; Drew Jones in Chemistry; Brett Spring in Biology. Amy Rutland and Susan Thames serve as sponsors for both the Math and Science Competition teams.
1st Edition Forensics and Debate Team: Forensics is a team of competitive speakers who go to state invitational tournaments to compete in speech events, dramatic events, and duo acting. The First Edition Forensics Team is one of the top 10 teams from Mississippi. This year t he team won the coveted traveling trophy that is given to the school with the most trophy points over a 6 year period. The team won it the first time in 2000 then again in 2006. This year marks the third time the First Edition Speech and Debate team has won this honor. The trophy will stay at Brookhaven High for a year. Instructor Carol Clanton was awarded her third diamond this year. This means that the students that she has coached have won trophy points amounting 6,068 over the last 19 years. She is one of only two practicing coaches in the state of Mississippi.

The First Edition Debate team competes in speech event, Lincoln/Douglas Debate, and Public Forum.

HUGH O’BRIAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP (HOBY) 10TH GRADER: This award was established by Hugh O’Brian in 1980. The recipient receives an all expense-paid seminar week-end at Millsaps. This award recognizes leadership potential of a high school sophomore and they will be eligible for over 85 college scholarships nationwide. One girl and one boy will be chosen at the seminar to attend the World Leadership Congress. The BHS HOBY ambassador is Roslynn Breakfield
WOODMAN OF THE WORLD AMERICAN HISTORY AWARD: The Woodman of the World Life Insurance Society presents this award for outstanding proficiency in American History. It goes to the student who has the highest average in the regular American History course - Austin Rutledge
DANFORTH FOUNDATION "I Dare You Award" AWARD is the highest award a junior at BHS may earn. The “I Dare You for Leadership Award” was first offered by William H. Danforth, one of the founders of the American Youth Foundation. Mr. Danforth was a successful businessman who dared young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence other through lives of leadership and service. The award includes a personalized certificate of recognition and a copy of I Dare You, Mr. Danforth’s classic book on personal motivation. The foundation asked that the teachers select a junior boy and girl who exhibit personal integrity, balanced living, and a potential for leadership as the award winners. We are pleased to announce the winners of the “I Dare You” Award for 2011-2012 are Jessie Claire Henning and Andrew Culver.
