Community Colleges and University Scholarships

Hinds Community College --- Orionna Brumfield will be receiving a $2300 Band Scholarship

University of Southern Mississippi --- awarded four students scholarships based on academic merit, leadership qualities, community service and Musical ability --- Demond Walker - Band $1500 per academic year and Choral Scholarship; Abbey Hickman - Academic Excellence Scholarship in the amount of $16,201; Emily Lowery -Leadership Scholarship in the amount of $20,400; Dennis Jordan-Eagle Assistance Program School $4,600

Belhaven -- Chelci Wilson-Academic Scholarship, Learning and Leading Day Scholarship and Visit Scholarship; Brook Hosick-Leadership Scholarship, Metro Christian Leadership Scholarship, and Visit Scholarship. Together these two students received over $100,000.00 in scholarships.

Mississippi College  -- Mississippi College is excited that 5 of Brookhaven’s Best will be joining the Choctaw family this fall. These students are:

Lincoln County Mississippi Scholars’ Scholarships are sponsored by the Brookhaven Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.  This year 39 students are recognized for their academic achievement by becoming a 2012 MS Scholar. There was over $20,000 given to Brookhaven High School students alone.

The Distinguished Young Woman --- The Distinguished Young Woman program was previously known as the Junior Miss program.  The young women were evaluated in five categories: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness and self-expression to decide the top contestants.   The Class of 2012 Lincoln County Distinguished Young Woman is Emily Lowery 

Krewe of Ceres Scholarship --- The Krewe of Ceres has a two-fold purpose-to recognize the area’s most outstanding young people and to raise money for local charitable causes. The recipients were chosen from applications received from students attending the area high schools. Community service was looked at closely as well as school and community involvement, honors, and academics. Three BHS students with $500 scholarships to the college or university they will be attending. Ansley Braden, Jessica Carr, and Austin Farnham.

The Volunteer Service Award --- Presented by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. This is the third year that this award has been presented to a BHS student. This award recognizes a very unique dedication to volunteerism and an exceptional commitment to helping others.  The recipient of this award has dedicated over 500 community service hours during the last twelve months. The recipient will receive a certificate of recognition, a letter from the President of the United States and a United States of America lapel pin. The Next award is the Special Congressional Award presented through the Lincoln County Teen Age Republicans Club and sponsored by Congressman Gregg Harper. This prestigious award recognizes this student for the outstanding academic achievements as well as the demonstration of leadership and citizenship throughout their high school career. The third award is the Lincoln County Teen Age Republican’s first Community Service Scholarship in the amount of $750. This student has consistently demonstrated an outstanding commitment to serving and helping others. We commend this student for making such a positive difference in Brookhaven and in the state of Mississippi. This scholarship is sponsored by Reed’s Metals, Sleek Communications, SuperTalk Mississippi 102.1 and the Lincoln County Republican Women’s Club.  The recipient of this year’s Volunteer Service Award, Special Congressional Award, and the Lincoln County Teen Age Republicans Community Service Scholarship is Ansley Braden

Dr. Mary Ann Baird Memorial Scholarship --- Dr. Mary Ann Baird was an exception woman, local and state educator, and tireless advocate for the children of Mississippi. We honor her memory as she celebrated our children. Each student will receive a $500 scholarship. Dr. George Brumfield will be presenting the 3 scholarships and this year’s recipients, and they are Tremell Benson, Cody Crosby and A. C. White 

Bank of Brookhaven Scholarship --- The Bank of Brookhaven is an Adopt-A-School for BHS (Special thanks to Mr. Shannon Aker and Bank of Brookhaven)…..The Scholarship winner exhibits good character.  Each will receive a scholarship in the amount of $500. The 2012 recipients are Kalen Calcote and Ashley Stephens

Alexander Homecoming Reunion Committee Award --- one-time scholarship in the amount of $1,000  per student will be awarded to Tyler Collins and Jazmin Lloyd.

Bertha L. Johnson Literary & Garden Club --- is awarded each year to a graduate of BHS who has been a resident of Lincoln Co. for at least 3 years in the amount of $500 to the college of your choice. The recipient of this scholarship is Terrell Breakfield

Brookhaven Evening Lions Club Scholarship --- The Brookhaven Evening Lions Club has provided sight and hearing services to the residents of Brookhaven and Lincoln County for over 44 years. These services include sight screening for students at city and county schools, glasses and hearing aids for needy persons, presenting a citizenship award to a student each month during the school year, support for students selected for the Lions All State Band, and sponsoring students to the Lions Boy’s and Girl’s Youth Leadership Conference each year. The Brookhaven Evening Lions Awarded their first scholarship to a deserving senior in 2011. Throughout the year, each month, a student was recognized as Student of the month. These are the Monthly Student of the Month recipients of the Brookhaven Evening Lions Club: September - Ashley Stephens; October - Brooks Foster; November - Jessica Patel; December - Paige Smith; January - Rachel Brown; February - Dana Herring; March - Hannah Wilson; April - Jessica Earl; May - Rani MacSorley.

Evening Lions Club --- this years’ scholarship in the amount of $500 to Jessica Earl

Delta Sigma Theta Soroity Pike County Alumnae Chapter --- 4 seniors will receive a scholarship from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. This sorority is a private non-profit organization founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. The winners of this year’s scholarship are Austin Farnham; Erica Bridwell; Hannah Wilson; and Terrell Breakfield

Kiwanis Club John “Dub” Sproles Scholarship --- John Wilson Sproles, known as "Dub" by family and friends, was a well respected husband, father, businessman, and leader of our community for many years. He was active in the Brookhaven Kiwanis Club, serving on various club committees and as club president. He was also active in theBrookhavenSchool Districtas a parent of six BHS graduates as well as serving on the Board of Trustees. Dub was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church.  He gave much more that he received, yet considered himself blessed. The qualities and characteristics exhibited by Dub during his lifetime are those to which all of us should strive to attain. It is with these thoughts that in 1992 the Brookhaven Kiwanis Club established a memorial scholarship in Dub Sproles’ honor. For the past several years, the Kiwanis Club has been able to provide more than one annual scholarship and this year they will be able to continue that tradition. Each John W. “Dub” Sproles scholarship is for $1500. These scholarships are awarded to recipients whom the club feels best exemplifies the qualities and characteristics espoused by its namesake, as well as providing educational assistance where it is needed the most. It is with pleasure that the Brookhaven Kiwanis Club awards the 2012 scholarship to Terrell Breakfield

Terrell is also the recipient of the American Association of Blacks in Energy Mississippi Chapter 2012 Don E. Meiners’ Scholarship Award in the amount of $2000

Kappa Kappa Iota Rho Chapter --- awards a $400 scholarship to a student that may be used at any community or senior college within the state of Mississippi. The 2012 winner is Paige Smith

The Versie Smith Scholarship --- in the amount of $500 is sponsored by Joe-nathan Lodge #3 Brookhaven. This award goes to Jessica Earl.

Lincoln County Farm Bureau Scholarship --- awarded to 2 students Terrell Breakfield and Jessica Patel

Woodman of the World Lodge 9 --- in the amount of $1000 to Holli Bullock

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Phi Mu Omega Chapter presented two scholarships. The Lillie M. Turner Memorial Scholarship is presented in memory of Phi Mu Omega Chapter charter member, Mrs. Lillie M. Turner. Mrs. Turner was a long time educator. Her leadership and services in the community were highlighted as she was presented an Unsung Hero award by the Brookhaven Community. Mrs. Turner lost her battle to breast cancer; however, she leaves a legacy of service to mankind. The Phi Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha continues this legacy through community programs such as our Annual Scholarship Ball, Breast Cancer Awareness, Financial Literacy Programs and Leadership Development for youth. It is an honor to support a young lady whose high school record reflects the service and scholastic achievement of Mrs. Lillie M. Turner. This young lady is receiving a $1500.00 scholarship from the Phi Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated -- Dana Herring

THE W. L. ROACH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP --- This scholarship in past years has been awarded to the Valedictorian. Since Mr. Roach’s passing the family has changed the criteria. It must be a

  • BHS graduating senior with a 2.5 or better GPA
  • Essay of 500 words to describe a hardship the applicant overcame and financial need to continue their education
  • Essay will be adjudicated by a committee selected by the principal
  • Check for $1,000 sent to the institution of high learning where student enrolls
  • BHS will present a plaque and a member of the family (if possible) will be present for Awards Ceremony to present the scholarship

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS:

PRESIDENTIAL ACADEMIC AWARDS --- to be considered for this award, students must meet the following standards:

  • Minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Minimum of 25 on the ACT
  • No discipline problems

Students receiving this award will receive a Gold Seal Certificate and letter from the President of the United States: ANSLEY BRADEN, TERRELL BREAKFIELD, JESSICA CARR, THEAVIS COOPER, STEPHEN DAVEY, DANIEL DAVIS, DYLAN FARRIS, AUSTIN FARNHAM, ABBEY HICKMAN, COREY JOHNSON, DREW JONES, EMILY LOWERY, JESSICA PATEL, KENNETH SITH, CHELCI WILSON

Life Skills --- presented to the outstanding senior in the Life Skills/Community Involvement program.  This student has demonstrated excellent work habits and attitudes --- Chelsea McCoy

Functional Skills --- presented to the outstanding student in the Functional skills/Vocational Preparation program. This young man has demonstrated excellence in mastering functional skills and in preparing for a career in the world of work. BHS is proud to present this award to Joseph A. C. White

THE THERESIA ABSHAGEN AWARD --- the Theresia Abshagen Award was established in 1979 by the class of 1949, in recognition of Miss Ab’s outstanding contributions to BHS and this community.  The award is presented to that student who best demonstrates the ability to read and write well. The winner is Jessica Carr

THE PAUL MOYER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP --- Paul Moyer was a long-time friend, educator, head coach, and athletic director of BrookhavenHigh School. His efforts have been acknowledged by Mississippisports historians and colleagues for years. The BHS baseball field is named in his honor. The Paul Moyer Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to the senior who has come nearest to attaining his/her greatest potential during the high school years. The scholarship was provided for many years by the late Mr. Roland Wall, Jr. a close personal friend of Coach Moyer’s. This was done to perpetuate his memory, his admirable character, and his attainment in spite of great odds. Today several friends have joined together to continue to provide this $500 scholarship in Coach Moyer’s memory. The winner is Kalen Calcote

The Paul Moyer Memorial Cup --- The Paul Moyer Memorial Cup is present in memory of Paul Moyer, former coach and athletic director. Honor in honesty, self-respect, a fighting courage that meant never quitting, and a respect for each person as an individual and a love and reverence for GOD are the ideals and principles for which he lived. The recipient is selected based on these ideals. The name of the outstanding senior athlete is engraved on the cup, which is kept permanently at BHS in the trophy case. The winners are Theavis Cooper and Erica Bridwell

LINDY CALLAHAN SCHOLARSHIP --- the MS High School Activities Assoc. in a combined effort to reward the exceptional student-athlete, ask each district to nominated one senior boy and one senior girl student-athlete. These students compete for 16 spots, to be held by the top student-athletes in Mississippi. The Brookhaven School District Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete Award and Scholarship nominees for 2012 are Erica Bridwell and Theavis Cooper

THE STATE BANK CITIZENSHIP AWARD --- the State Bank Citizenship Award is present by State Bank to a boy and a girl, who is judged to have shown the most interest in the betterment of the school, worked on its behalf, and demonstrated the best school citizenship. This Award is chosen by a secret vote of the faculty. The winners are Jessica Carr and Theavis Cooper

THE ACTIVITY MEDAL --- The Activity Medal is awarded to the BHS senior who has participated most wisely and enthusiastically in extra-curricular activities. The winner of this award has given unselfishly of his/her time and talents to the classmates of BHS. The winner, as voted on by the faculty, is Erica Bridwell 

The next four awards are based on academic grade point and the highest number of regular social studies, math, science and English classes taken.

THE JOSIE A. BURNS MEMORIAL HISTORY AWARD --- the Josie A. Burns Memorial Award is given in memory of Mrs. Burns, a long-time, dedicated and loved history teacher of BHS.  In 1982 the family presented a cup to the school and the name of the graduating senior who has earned the highest AVG and has TAKEN THE MOST SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES at Brookhaven High School is engraved on the cup.  This student is also presented a plague today as a personal keepsake. This year’s winner with a 97.4 average in 9 social studies courses is Jessica Carr

THE MU ALPHA THETA MATH AWARD --- the Mu Alpha Theta Math Award is presented to the senior who has the highest AVG and have TAKEN THE MOST MATH CLASSES at Brookhaven High School.  The student will receive a plaque today. The winner with a 99.5 average in 6 math course is Terrell Breakfield

THE STATE BANK SCIENCE AWARD --- the State Bank Science Award is presented to the senior who has the highest AVG and have TAKEN THE MOST SCIENCE CLASSES at Brookhaven High School.  The student will receive a plaque today. The winner with a 93.7 average in 7 science courses is Ansley Braden

THE FRANCES SEAVEY MEMORIAL AWARD --- the Frances Seavey Memorial Award was established in 1966 in honor of the inspiring life of Mrs. Frances Seavey. The winner is the senior who earns the highest AVG in all English classes. The name of the winner is engraved on the cup that remains at BHS. The student receives a plaque as a keepsake. The winner of the Frances Seavey Memorial Award with an average of 98.2 in 9 English courses is Jessica Carr.

STUDENT-TEACHER ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION --- each year the Mississippi Economic Council sponsors the STAR program in an effort to encourage scholastic achievement among the state’s high school students. The STAR Student must be completing his/her last year of high school and must be eligible to receive a diploma during the current year. The senior with the highest ACT score by December with at least an overall average of 93 is named the STAR Student. That student chosen is asked to designate a STAR TEACHER. This year's STAR Student for 2012 has an ACT score of 30 and a GPA of 95.91 --- Stephen Davey. Star Teacher is Leahann Peavey

 

THE CLASS HONOR CUP!

The Class Honor Cup Award is the greatest honor that a Brookhaven High School student can receive.  The cup is presented in remembrance of the Class of 1920 and its teachers to a member of the senior class who has attended BHS for at least two years. The student has noble ideas and is faithful in the performance of daily duties, and by earnest endeavor has the cleanest and most praiseworthy record as a student at BHS. The high school faculty selects the winner by secret ballot. Since the Class Honor Cup is in permanent possession of the school, a plaque is given as a keepsake to the student winning this high honor. The 2012 Class Honor Cup was presented to Roshelman Terrell Breakfield, Jr.
