Alexander Junior High recognized for making strides in student achievement

The Mississippi Department of Education recently assigned Alexander Junior High the label of a "High Progress School" for making positive improvements in student performance.

In order to earn a "High Progress" label, AJH has to accomplish two objectives. First, there is a two-year comparison of the QDI (Quality Distribution Index) for student achievement. AJH showed an increase in their QDI that placed them in the top 10% of all schools in the state. Secondly, the "gap" of student achievement is considered. This is the area between the top 25% of students and the bottom 25%. With this award, AJH was recognized for its additional achievement of narrowing the gap.

Principal Rod Henderson states that the success the school is having is due to team work. The school's administration and teachers are looking more closely at certain areas in student results that they want to attack for improvement.

"We began to focus on students who were deficient in subject areas and on the borderline for improvement. If we can identify those kids who are almost to the next level, they can be pushed and encouraged enough to get there," Henderson said.

The other component, Henderson said, is keeping the high achieving students performing at their level. He said it is a mistake to assume those students will never fall backwards.

"We have to keep an eye and an effort on those kids who already score high on testing," he said. "Making sure they continue to do well is a challenge but very necessary to keep up overall performance."

Henderson credits his staff for all their efforts in teaching every day.

"The teachers here really understand our goals and work hard with their students to do their very best," he said.

The Forensics class at BHS will present a fascinating, historic tour through the local cemetery as a fundraiser for team activities. The project is as much story telling as it is a history lesson. Students have been assigned names of notable residents from Brookhaven. They wrote a short piece about the lives and accomplishments of these residents. Taking on a role as the actual person, students will stand by their grave and share their life story with onlookers.

The graveyard tours will take place Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and again Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $3 per person.

The biographies that will be featured are:

School system marked with high findings for re-accreditation

An external review team visited the Brookhaven School District for almost 3 days to closely evaluate the school district and its practices.

After visiting more than 30 classrooms and speaking with close to 200 students, parents, and staff members, the team had many positive points to say about Brookhaven Schools. Among the higher marks from inside the classroom, the team noted excellent practices of providing equitable learning, high expectations, a supportive and active learning environment, and well managed classrooms.

Listed as "powerful practices", the schools were noted for having good communication across different media formats, such as the district website. Community stakeholders showed a sense of pride and allegiance to the District. There is a sense of collaboration and respect that exists among school board members. The team found effective management of finances. Teachers have solid instructional practices that provide students with immediate feedback, and students are actively engaged in the learning process.

The team also recommended areas for improvement within the District. For example, more quality assurance needs to take place with schools working together toward common goals. Another point regarded common assessments - making suire they are taking place at each school. Finally, it was recommended that the schools develop a valid process to evaluate current programs.

Overall, the visit was very positive for the district and the re-accreditation of Brookhaven Schools will be recommended.

Successful Academy of Reading program attracts other districts to take a look

Madison School District recently visited our schools to see the Academy of Reading and Math in action. The visitors are considering implementing the intervention program into their district. BES, Lipsey and AJH all utilize the Academy and have seen successful growth in students who complete the lessons. (Pictured below is the AJH Academy lab with visiting Madison officials)
